‘Kingdom will continue strong US relations’

Manama : Donald Trump’s win may have raised eyebrows in various quarters in the GCC, but Bahraini Parliamentarians have calmed such fears. The Kingdom will continue its strong relations with the United States regardless of who is President, the Parliamentarians said yesterday, while reacting to Donald Trump’s victory in the US elections.

The MPs are hopeful that the economic and diplomatic relations between USA and Bahrain will continue to grow. DT News spoke to a few Bahraini MP’s and Americans on their views on US election results.

“The uncertainties in the market following the conclusion of the bitter-fought election is only temporary. The oil price fluctuation is a temporary reaction because of what happened, but I do not think that this will have a long term impact. The GCC economies are strong and we have survived a lot of shocks.

I also hope the American government will take measures to keep Muslims safe as possible. The Council on American–Islamic Relations (CAIR) is really worried. We trust the American people, we know them as very friendly, considerate and kind”

“I am sure that America’s foreign policy will remain the same at the end of the day. As he becomes the president, he has to look at the countries that America share bilateral relations with. This is not a case where one person can change everything.  There are a number of long term treaties, trade deals and other agreements that America has signed with a number of countries and I am sure it will be respected. Bahrain will continue its good relation with America and perhaps even strengthen our relations”

“I am a bit surprised as I expected the elections to be very tight. I would not say that I am satisfied because he is not someone I would vote for. But we will have to wait and see what happens and hope for the best. I spoke to some of the community members, they were surprised as well as they expected Hilary do much better”

“ Trump used fear and anger in people to turn to him. A lot of American people were tired of what was going on and he used that to his advantage. I voted for Hilary, not because I am a democrat, but because she represented what I believed in. In the end I am an shocked at the results. But at the end of the day there is nothing more for us to do other than to wait and see what happens”

“I was shocked to see the news, I honestly thought Clinton would win. I am from Texas and we are traditionally very much republican. This election was different because there were a lot of questions about both the candidates. Now only time will tell how it goes, it could be awful, it could shake up the system or turn out to be something good but I am sure that there will be a change either-way”
