Ex-employee to sue food supplier over expired items

ManamaA former employee of a food ingredients supplier said she will sue the company for allegedly tampering with food labels and expiry dates.

The woman, a resident of Manama, said she had worked with the food supplier firm for over 15 years.

She claimed that the company, which supplies ingredients for cakes, chocolates and other desserts, distributed expired items to hotels, schools and restaurants after having the labels changed, an allegation that the firm has denied.

She told DT News that she has already hired a lawyer to register a case against the company.

“The company has been tampering with the labels and distributing expired food products everywhere. People all over Bahrain have been eating expired food all these years.”

“When I first joined this company, I didn’t know about this. And I don’t know exactly when they started doing this. When I found out, I was shocked. But I didn’t want to jump the gun and get myself fired. I am a single mother with a young daughter to take care of. So I couldn’t afford to lose my job,” she said.

“I tried to warn others secretly; firstly I tried warning my clients by sending pictures of the expired products and how they changed the labels. My boss found this out earlier this month and fired me,” she explained. “Currently, I am without a job and I am struggling. My daughter is in the Philippines and I am worried for her.”

The woman disclosed that she recorded a video that shows company workers tampering with food labels. “It’s the best evidence to back up my claims,” she said.

Allegations dismissed

However, a company spokesperson dismissed the video, saying she tricked the men into doing it.

“As for the video, she asked two unsuspecting persons to do what is seen in the tape to make a point against us,” the spokesperson said.

Another representative from the company said the allegations were baseless. He said that she tried blackmailing the company into paying BD100,000.

“She had asked me to pay the amount of BD100,000 as blackmail payment. ‘Pay me or I will shut your company down,’ she told me! She is doing this because we have terminated her contract with us,” said the representative.

“She started blemishing the company’s name after we refused to pay her the money. We are controlled by health authorities and all our suppliers can tell if the labels were being changed, nobody is stupid. She has worked with us for 15 years as a sales person. How come we are the bad guys soon after she lost her job?” he added.
