Official urges new island for labourers

ManamaA Bahraini councillor has called for creating a new island to build accommodations for non-Bahraini bachelor labourers living in Muharraq.

The official also said that the island should be properly developed with residences, markets, worship places and other facilities.

During a recent interview with DT News, Muharraq Municipal Council Chairman Mohammed Al Sinan said, “This would contribute in  eliminating the phenomenon of increasing residences of bachelor non-Bahraini workers on the island (Muharraq).”

“The responsibility of this huge project should be shared by both the public and private sectors,” he added.

Al Sinan explained that the proposal to build artificial islands, similarly to Amwaj and Diyar Al Muharraq islands, comes as Muharraq lacks free lands to accommodate the increasing number of labourers and considering the large population density on the island.

Al Sinan’s statements came at a time when the lawmakers are seeking a solution for the issue, as complaints on bachelor labourers have increased lately from Bahrainis and expatriates families.

To this end, the MPs  had also recently passed a new draft law that regulates the residency permits of bachelor expat workers in residential areas and banning it in some areas.

The draft law was referred to the Shura Council, before it would be sent to the government for approval.
