MP calls for allocating specialised cycling track

ManamaA lawmaker has urged the government to allocate a specialised cycling track near the southwestern coasts of the Island.

Considering the increasing popularity of the sport, former Youth and Sports Affairs Committee Chairman Ghazi Al Rahma presented the proposal to construct a cycling track or route in the surrounding area of Bahrain International Circuit and Al Jaza’er Beach.

“This proposal would encourage and prepare the Bahraini youth to take part in regional and international cycling events. It would also promote the Kingdom as a hub of many sports in the region, and enable it to organise international cycling competitions,” Al Rahma stated.

“Cycling has grabbed popular and official attention lately. We see more people interested in this sport nowadays more than ever. This is of course accompanied by a noticeable increase in the numbers of contests and competitions organised regionally and internationally.”

“Bahrain is no exception in this. Cycling gained more popularity among the Bahraini youth, who showed an interest in practising the sport on a professional level. This was proven when the Bahraini Cycling Association was crowned with the First GCC Cycling Championship in 2011,” Al Rahma added.

Parts of Gulf of Bahrain and Zallaq Highways were recently allocated for cyclists, providing enthusiasts and professionals a safe and suitable area to ride. This comes in line with the instructions of His Majesty the King’s Representative for Charity Works and Youth Affairs, Supreme Council for Youth and Sports Chairman and Bahrain Olympic Committee President HH Shaikh Nasser bin Hamad Al Khalifa.
