Bahrainis in Japan not affected by quake

Manama : Bahrainis in Japan are safe after a powerful earthquake hit the country yesterday.

The 6.9-magnitude earthquake hit northeast Japan in the early hours of the previous day, sparking panic and triggering a tsunami including a one-metre (three-foot) wave that crashed ashore at the stricken Fukushima nuclear power plant.

The Bahrain Embassy in Japan confirmed to DT News that the quake has not affected Tokyo where Bahrainis primarily reside.

“There are only 10 Bahrainis in the whole of Japan, including two diplomats. No casualties or injuries were reported,” a spokesperson said.

The embassy posted on its official Twitter page, “Citizens who are in Tokyo should be cautious and follow the earthquake safety instructions. Contact 00817038202111 or 00818034130349 in case of emergency.”

Moreover, the Japanese Ambassador Kiyoshi Asako told DT News, “We are aware of the situation. No big damages have been confirmed yet.”

Terrifying moments

A Bahraini student, who is staying in Tsukuba, around 170km to the south of Fukushima, shared with DT News the terrifying moments he witnessed yesterday.

Ammar Shaker, who is a PhD student in Molecular Biology, has been living in Japan for the past one year. He told DT News that he had witnessed natural disasters in the region including earthquakes, which are frequent in that part of the world.

However, the student said yesterday’s quake was the strongest he witnessed during his stay in the Far-East.

“It happened in the morning and woke me up from my sleep. The building was shaking strongly. I was praying until it stopped. The Bahraini Embassy e-mailed me asking if I was safe,” Shaker said.

He added that later in the day, the panic subsided and the quake-struck country returned to normal life.

The Meteorological Agency lifted its final tsunami warning nearly seven hours after the earthquake struck.
