Residents’ violations caused flooding, claims Ministry

ManamaThe flood that submerged a couple of newly commissioned housing projects  in Muharraq on Friday and continued yesterday was apparently caused by wrong practices of the residents, authorities said.

This was revealed after residents of Galali, Samaheej and Al Dair housing projects complained to the authorities about the losses they incurred  in the past two days due to undrained rainwater.

Residents claimed that the flood has damaged their houses and furniture. The villian, according to them,  was the newly constructed drainage system, which failed to do the job.

The Housing Ministry later explained in a press statement that the flooding was caused by the wrong behaviours and practices of residents, who had been disposing off construction materials and other waste materials in the rainwater drainage networks.

The Ministry also confirmed that its specialised teams have been working around the clock to tackle the issue, which has been completely rectified yesterday.

According to the Ministry, a new drainage channel to direct water towards the sea has been established in the area recently. It also mentioned that Works, Municipalities Affairs and Urban Planning Ministry had installed several pumps in the areas to serve the same purpose.

The Ministry announced that the disposed of materials and sands were used in “unlicensed” building processes.
