Decreasing the supply and demand of narcotics is the best mean to eliminate drug abuse in the Kingdom, a senior security official stated lately.

Interior Ministry’s Anti-Narcotics Director Lieutenant Colonel Mubarak Binhuwail claimed “intensifying raids on drugs smugglers will sure have an effect on the price of narcotic substances in the market, resulting in the reduction of demand among addicts and abusers.”

“Our aim is to create a drugs-free society. It is a noble goal that serves national interest and we’re cooperating with various departments and directorates of the ministry to achieve it. We’re jointly working with Customs Affairs and Coastguards Directorate in this regard,” Binhuwail said.

He announced that as a result of this cooperation, 33 kilogrammes of Hashish, 12 KGs of Herion, 2 KGs of methamphetamine, four KGs of Marijuana and thee and a half KGs of opium poppies seeds were confiscated in the period between the January 1 and May 20 this year.

He further explained, “A large quantity of narcotic drugs were also seized in the same period, including 100, 000 methamphetamine pills, 120, 000 Tramadol narcotic pills and 1000 of pills and capsules of Alprazolam.”

Binhuwail clarified that a total of 391 cases were recently detected, including 192 smuggling cases through King Fahad Causeway and 45 in Bahrain International Airport. 596 suspects were arrested in the same period in relation to the cases. They included 199 Bahrainis, 273 Gulf nationals, 17 Arab nationals and 107 foreigners.

“Another way to eliminate drugs abuse in our society is increasing awareness, which serves the purpose of declining the demand on such substances. We must realise that addicts are patients and need treatment and care more than punishment. Increasing awareness on the harm of drugs abuse will reduce the number of people who’re inclining towards the trap of drugs and easily to fall prey to it,” he added.
