Rights organisation to campaign for Rohingyas in Europe, US

Manama : A Bahraini human rights organisation has teamed up with a group of Rohingya activists to run an international campaign for the Rohingya cause. The move comes after a group of Rohingya activists met Bahrain Human Rights Watch Society (BHRWS) General Secretary Faisal Fulad in Manama earlier this week. The group, all of whom are Rohingya refugees, sought help from the Bahrain Human Rights Watch Society (BHRWS) to start a campaign for them early next year.

According to Fulad, BHWR will run a campaign at one of the international human rights forums in Europe and USA in February. “Our discussions with the Rohingya activists were about how we can highlight their issue on an international level. We will have our campaign at one of the human rights forums in February, these meetings which witness the participation of human rights experts from all over the world will be a perfect platform to raise this issues and to provoke a productive discussion.”

Speaking to DT News, Fulad explained that the situation of the Rohingya people has been worsening in recent years and it is an issue that should concern all nations. “The suffering of the Rohingya people is well documented, they have been suffering in land and in sea. They are treated as an unwanted people, their government persecutes them and the world rejects them. It is time for us to step up and do what is necessary to end their sufferings.”

Rohingyas have been subjected to one of the worst human rights abuses in the world in recent decades, he said. “The Myanmar government refuses to give them a passport so they are rendered stateless. They have been deported from most of the countries that they sought refuge in. Their life in Myanmar is a horrible one, they do not have access to schools, medical facilities and they live in poverty. Last year, they faced one of the worst human rights violations when they were forced into the sea.” He said that BHRWS plans to further its partnership with Rohingya NGOs.
