Sending a strong message
Manama : More then 200 volunteers, including school children joined their hands together yesterday in an effort to remove the vast amount of accumulated trash in the coastal areas before it is washed into the ocean and onto local beaches.
The environmental activists grouped under the umbrella of “Let the nature speak”, at Barbar beach proved that our community really cares about nature. They sent a message yesterday that coastal areas are important resources which are to be valued and restored.
“We choose Barbar to send the message and to protect the virgin beaches in Bahrain. As these islands are not protected, it is our duty to call for these kinds of initiatives. Recently we saw lot of commercial establishments spoiling the harmony of land and oceans. These events will pass a strong message to the coming generation,” said Abbas Alomosavi to DT News.
An artist himself, Abbas believes that art plays an important role in motivating kids who volunteer here for the cleanup. “We can guide the kids and give them the
sense of importance of nature in our life through colours,” he said.
An art and photography gallery and free drawing corner under the supervision of Abbas witnessed a huge turnout yesterday.
Before the start of the cleanup, the students were educated about the importance of social, environmental and biodiversity of the coastal area by Dr. Shubber E. Al Weda, Chairman, Bahrain Environment Society.
“Improving the quality of our outdoor environment is something that we should consider seriously. The first step to this is to clean up our local space. Outdoor environments have a significant impact on humans, and productivity. Based on our extensive research, we had identified the
best tools and practices for maintaining outdoor cleanliness that protect human health and environment,” he said. “Let the nature speak” was conducted in cooperation with the Muncipality of the governorate and Ocean for contracting Est to educate and motivate the local community on the importance of preserving nature and costal area around Bahrain.
The noble cause also saw the participation of Northern municipality council, the Bahrain Environment society, Barbar sports and cultural club, schools children, amateur photographer and other voluntary groups.
“Such events help protect the ocean from the challenges it faces every year. We serve as a voice for the environment, pointing the issues that needs to be addressed in the open forum, public updates or through social media,” says Ateyatalla Hasan Mohammed Roohani, Member of Commissioner Rights Prisoner and Detainees comments.
Such initiatives will help everyone to be responsible and thereby eliminate the root cause of all environmental hazards. “The environment heals us and keeps us healthy. Simply being exposed to sunlight and fresh air makes a huge difference in one’s lives,” said Dr. Agdulhassan Al Dairi, Ambassador of Arab Youth.
Amani Al Tawash, Cup of Art Club, said that the drawings and art corner at the site helped motivate the volunteers in their mission. “I felt good to come here and it was really exciting. The volunteers enjoyed the exercise and related themselves with the drawings at the gallery,” she told DT News.
Every year thousands of tons of garbage ends up in the oceans, creating a hazardous environment for the marine life. The members also urged for more initiatives to clean up the garbage washed up on the shore and revive the beaches.
