Obesity centre to be set up in Kingdom
Manama : A Centre for Obesity and Digestive Surgery (CODS) will be set up in the Kingdom, said Dr Muffazal Lakdawala, a renowned weight loss surgeon.
The centre will support Bahrain’s anti- obesity drive and will mark entry of his CODS in India to the Gulf.
Dr Muffazal who has treated high profile patients plans to share his rich experience in providing world class obesity solutions by assisting local health authorities in Bahrain.
He was recently invited to the BDF Hospital here to treat a VIP patient during which he conceptualised the idea to have a centre of excellence in Bahrain.
“I performed bariatric surgery on a Bahraini VIP at the BDF Hospital last month which was successful and helped me to decide that it’s important to set up CODS in Bahrain because of its strategic location,” he said.
The doctor said his centre in Mumbai in India has helped thousands of patients return to a normal life and is keen to provide world class treatment for Bahrainis and Saudi patients.
Dr Lakdawala made headlines last month when he stepped in to help the world’s heaviest person Iman Ahmed Adulati, at 500 kilograms, who never left her house in Egypt for 25 years. The doctor plans to help the desperate Cairo girl shed up to 400kgs.
Dr Muffazal was approached by Abdulati’s sister to save her life. He took up the challenge, and even secured her a visa with help of Indian Minister of External Affairs, Sushma Swaraj.
“I will soon travel to Cairo to help the family with the pre-operation preparations and to charter a special plane equipped with medical equipment to bring her to India since the family cannot afford the costs. Iman will receive free treatment for three months and even more if required at the Saifee Hospital in Mumbai,” the doctor said.
“The news that a distinguished surgeon such as Dr Lakdawala is considering Bahrain as a Middle East extension of his work underscores the Kingdom’s excellent and pro-active approach to health care delivery,” told Mohammed Dadabhai, a Bahraini Businessman, who is related to Dr Lakdawala to DT News.
“He has won global accolade at the renowned Saifee hospital and has now shown great confidence by helping the world’s heaviest woman Iman to reclaim her life.”
