Car runs over workers, killing one and injuring another

Manama: An Indian expatriate worker died in a tragic accident when a car hit him while he was engaged in road repair work this morning in East Riffa.

The Interior Ministry confirmed the incident in a Twitter message : ‘Asian pedestrian died, another injured when they were hit by a car on Al Mahzoora road in East Riffa. Police took the necessary steps’, the message read.

DT News could verify the identity of the dead person as an Indian expatriate Chandra Babu aged 55 who was a worker in Esmaely Lenzohm Electrical Co. WLL in Alba area. Another worker Sreenivas from the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh was seriously injured in the accident.

Both Chandra Babu and Sreenivas were working on the pavement laying bricks when suddenly the car driven by a Bahraini lady lost control and run over them. After hitting the workers on the pavement the car skidded into the road again and stopped some 20 meters away before stopping.

The incident happened on the highway in front of Alsad market in Sanad today morning at around nine O’clock. The dead body of Chandra Babu has been shifted to Slamaniya Medical Complex morgue while Sreenivas is admitted in the intensive care unit.

Chandra Babu hails from the Indian state of Kerala and is survived by his wife Sunitha and two children. He has been leading an expatriate life in Bahrain for the past 15 years.
