Manama : While the vehicle population in the country increased last year, the number of fatal and non-fatal  accidents had fallen to almost 50 per cent, when compared to 2015.

“Only 44 fatal accidents were reported last year, which reflects the efforts of General Directorate of Traffic to achieve traffic safety”, said Minister of Interior, Lt General Shaikh Rashid bin Abdulla Al Khalifa.

The minister was speaking at the Traffic Council meeting, in the presence of Minister of Education, Dr. Majid Al Nuaimi, Minister of Works, Municipalities  Affairs &  Urban  Planning, Essam Khalaf and Minister of Transportation and Telecommunications, Kamal  Ahmed.

The council reviewed a study by the General Directorate of Traffic on introducing traffic awareness programmes at the education institutions. The meeting cited that lack of awareness about traffic rules among youngsters as the main reason behind the accidents.

The minister hailed the contents of the study and said that it will be referred to the technical committee of council to determine the  implementation.
