First stage victory for Bahrain Merida

Manama : Bahrain Merida Pro Cycling Team are celebrating its first stage victory in its second international event as rider Ramunas Navardauskas from Lithuania won the 11.9km Individual Time Trial Stage 3 of the La Vuelta a San Juan cycling race in Argentina in a time of 14 minutes and three seconds.

Coming in second place was Bauke Mollema (+3 seconds) of The Netherlands riding for the Trek-Segafredo team, followed by teammate Matthias Brandle (+7) of Austria in third, while another Bahrain Merida rider Kanstantin Sivitsov (+32) was tenth.

Navardauskas (six hours 22 minutes 27 seconds) leads the overall classification after three stages and the jersey, followed in second place by Mollema (+3), Brandle (+7) third and France’s Remi Cavagna (+7) riding for Quick-Step Floors in fourth.

“My legs are light and I’m really relaxed are probably are the victory effects!Looking back, I was not thinking to win and just wanted to give my best and try to have a good race and push very strong in the time trial,” said Ramunas Navardauskas.

Following the victory, sports director Paolo Slongo said, “We are very proud for this first victory in the history of the Bahrain Merida team and no doubt it’s a success that has a particular value, but to tell you the truth I’m not so surprised and thought that a specialist like Ramunas would make a good result, but would also like to highlight the good performance of the team with four athletes in the top 13 and going in the right direction.”

The race is over seven stages and covers a distance of 930kms and concludes on Sunday.
