Lawbreakers fined BD3.5 million
Manama : The Public Prosecution collected more than BD3.5 million in fines and bails from lawbreakers in 2016, said General Attorney Dr. Ali Al Buainain during a press conference held here yesterday.
Announcing the prosecution’s 2016 report, he said that the Kingdom saw a marginal drop in the number of crimes committed in 2016 as compared to the previous two years.
“The Public Prosecution recorded 117,790 offences last year, in comparison with 122,645 offences in 2015, with a decrease of around 5,000 offences,” he said.
Data presented at the conference showed that misdemeanours took the lion’s share of the total offences committed in 2016, with 81,422 misdemeanours, 3,883 administrative complaints and 3,373 felonies. Dr. Al Buainain also said that most offences occurred in the Capital Governorate, which recorded 28, 449 cases.
“15,984 offences took place in the Northern Governorate, 12,071 in the Southern Governorate and 9,837 in Muharraq Governorate,” the General Attorney revealed.
As for juvenile offences, Dr. Al Buainain clarified that the Public Prosecution has dealt with 400 cases involving minors suspected of committing various crimes last year. He also said that the prosecution dealt with cases involving 677 underage victims last year. The official underlined that an increase in exploiting children in rioting have been noticed recently.
Speaking on recent events, Al Buainain said that prosecution is investigating the killing of police officer First Lieutenant Hisham Al Hammadi and the injury of a youngster, who was apparently shot in Diraz last week.
