Kingdom strengthens human rights obligations

GenevaThe Kingdom yesterday affirmed anew its respect for human rights and basic freedoms of citizens, its openness to cooperation with relevant international sides and its resolve to continue building on the accomplishments in the field.

This comes as the Ministry of Foreign Affairs presented, the 3rd National Universal Periodic Review (UPR) Report on Human Rights to the United Nations Human Rights Council and the Geneva-based Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights OHCRH yesterday.

The report contained the measures adopted by Bahrain in implementation of the recommendations that have been proposed by certain countries during UNHRC discussion of Bahrain’s Second UPR Report.

“The report sheds light on the most important developments and achievements made over the past 4 years in reinforcing and protecting human rights in different areas and outlined the government plan of action for the period 2015-2018, which targets among others, the creation of a society characterised by justice, security, stability, prosperity and sustainable development,” assistant Foreign Minister, Abdullah bin Faisal bin Jabr Al Dossari said.

The report also pointed out to some challenges such as the strained regional situation, increasing extremism, its impact and the additional burden they placed on official sides in encountering these grave conditions.

It also noted the attempts of certain sides, under the claim of the human Rights causes, to achieve petty political gains, while others have resorted to violence and terrorism jeopardizing innocent lives and hampering stability and development efforts.

The United Nations General Assembly has initiated the UPR mechanism with an aim to ensure protection of and respect for human rights across the globe. The Council will discuss the report of  Bahrain, on Monday 1st of May, 2017.
