Car thief’s blunder leads to arrest
Manama : An unlucky car thief was arrested in Hamad Town after he unknowingly parked the stolen vehicle near its owner’s house.
According to court files, the owner recognised his car even though the thief changed its number plates.
The details of the case go back to September 4, 2014, when the victim parked his car in one of Manama’s roads as he entered a jewelry shop.
“The thief took off with the car which had money and personal belongings in it. The victim informed the police about the incident on the same day. But when the police reviewed the footage of the CCTV cameras installed in the shop, the recordings were not clear enough to identify the hijacker,” the case files showed.
It was also mentioned in the court that the victim’s father recognised the stolen vehicle parked near his house in Hamad Town. He called his son who opened it using the remote control, thereby confirming it. Both the victim and his father waited for the thief, who was visiting a friend who lived close by, and handed him over to the police. The man was found guilty by the prosecution for driving the victim’s vehicle without permission. The prosecution referred the defendant to the Third Lower Criminal Court, which sentenced him to one year of imprisonment and a BD200 bail to suspend the sentence.
