Strong winds wreak damage in Bahrain

Manama : The thunderstorms that lashed Bahrain during the past two days have wreaked havoc around town, with flooding, uprooting of trees and chaos created  in different parts of the country.

The strong winds, which reached the speed of 35 knots (around 65kmh), uprooted a tree in Salmaniya Avenue in the capital near Al Andalus Park on Sunday night, blocking the right lane of the vital road.

Few kilometers to the west, a lamp post fell on Budaiya Highway near Jidhafs without causing any injuries or damages to any vehicles.

The strong gusts even caused several unstable walls to collapse in Isa Town and Mahooz, damaging a couple of parked vehicels.

Rain water flooding

Works, Municipalities Affairs and Urban Planning Ministry said in a press statement that it’s working around the clock to tackle the rainwater flooding issue in different parts of the country.

The ministry’s Rainwater Emergency Committee and Works Undersecretary Ahmed Al Khayat stated that 107 water tankers and 23 pumps are excavating the excessive rainwater from all four governorates of the Kingdom.  

Al Khayat pointed to the importance of protecting the sewerage networks and not to dispose of rainwater in them, calling upon the public  not to open the network’s lids and report flooding to the ministry’s hotline on 80001810.

Meanwhile, the Meteorological Directorate at the Ministry of Transportation and Telecommunications has predicted an unstable weather today, with rain showers that may be thundery at times and strong gusts, urging the public to be vigilant and cautious.
