FILM: ALICE IN THE CITIES

Alice in the Cities is a 1974 German road movie directed by Wim Wenders. This was the first part of Wenders’ “Road Movie trilogy” which included The Wrong Move (1975) and Kings of the Road (1976). The film is shot in black and white by Robby Müller with several long scenes without dialogue. The film’s theme foreshadows Wenders’ later film Paris, Texas. 

G e r m a n journalist Philip Winter has a case of writer’s block when trying to write an article about the United States. He decides to return to Germany, and while trying to book a flight, encounters a German woman and her nine year old daughter Alice doing the same. The three become friends (almost out of necessity) and while the mother asks Winter to mind Alice temporarily, it quickly becomes apparent that Alice will be his responsibility for longer than he expected. After returning to Europe, the innocent friendship between Winter and Alice grows as they travel together through various European cities on a quest for Alice’s grandmother.

GAZING AT THE CONTEMPORARY WORLD: JAPANESE PHOTOGRAPHY FROM 1970S TO THE PRESENT 

Date: Ongoing till 4 March 2017, 8:00am - 8:00pm 

Venue: Bahrain National Museum 

Presenting an overview of the photographic expression that has emerged in Japan since the 1970s, this exhibition includes 76 photographs by 23 photographers. The exhibit is divided into two sections, the first, “A Changing Society,” focuses on human beings as members of society. The second, “Changing Landscapes,” looks at cities, the suburbs and nature. This exhibition is presented in Bahrain in cooperation with the Japan Foundation. 

TASTE TOUR

The ‘Taste Tour’ will return this year and will include a total of 29 participating restaurants. Participants will be able to sample dishes and vote for their favorite restaurants. They will also have the opportunity to win An Infinity Q50 car from YK Almoayyed & Sons as part of a ‘The Taste Tour’ raffle draw.
