Bahrain dominate

Manama : Bahrain’s athletes yesterday were in dominant form at the Fifth GCC Women’s Games in Doha.

The athletic team captured three gold, two silver and one bronze, while the shooting team bagged a bronze medal, taking Bahrain tally to 15 medals in total (5 gold, 7 silver, 3 bronze) at the end of the fourth day of the games. 

They are being followed by Oman (4, 3, 3) who went down to second. Qatar (3, 6, 6) are third and the UAE  (3, 1, 0) fourth.

Tajest Mikonin opened Bahrain’s medal account of the day, taking home the 3,000m hurdles gold in 10 minutes and 1.49 seconds. She was followed by compatriot Winfred Mutile (10:02.71).

Marta Hirpato then clinched a second gold medal for Bahrain in the 800m, finishing the race in 2:14.74.

The 4x100m relay team-completed Bahrain’s gold medal haul by coming first in 49.34 seconds. Basma Mohammed also secured a place on the podium, winning the discus throw silver with his best attempt being 33.48 metres.

Athletics action concludes today with Bahrain’s athletes hoping to add to their medal tally in the finals of the 100m, 1,600m and 5,000m.

Elsewhere, Bahrain registered another victory at Lusail Shooting Circuit, where the team of Sara Al Dossary, Aseel Abdulghaffar and Safa Al Dossary secured the three positions bronze.

It was the fourth medal for Bahrain in shooting, having won three medals on Thursday in the air pistol team gold and 50m air rifle team bronze, in addition to the air pistol silver.

In volleyball, Bahrain look to regain some confidence today when they take on host country Qatar at Aspire Academy hall.

This will be Bahrain’s third game in this four-nation tournament. They lost their first game to defending champions the UAE 0-3, then came from a set down to beat Oman 3-1 in the second match.

Elsewhere, Bahrain play their first game in the second and decisive leg of the round robin handball championship today against Qatar. The nationals have lost two of their three matches to the UAE and Qatar, while their only win was against Oman.

Meanwhile, the basketball, table tennis and taekwondo teams arrived in Doha yesterday ahead of their respective competitions kicking off over the weekend.
