Caretaker detained for ‘faking’ assault
Manama : The caretaker of a mosque who faked his own assault last week has been detained for seven days pending further investigations, reports said yesterday.
The 54-year-old Bahraini had reportedly injured himself, asked an Asian to take photos of his injuries and filed a false complaint against two masked men, claiming he was a victim of armed robbery.
The security cameras installed in the vicinity, however, exposed the man’s hollow claims.
Northern Governorate Prosecution Head Mohammed Salah clarified yesterday that the prosecution took its decision after interrogating the man.
“The defendant lodged a complaint against two men at the Southern Hamad Town Police Station. He claimed that the men attacked him and tried to rob him. After reviewing the recordings of CCTV cameras installed near the mosque, it was clear that the man’s claims were baseless,”
Salah stated.
The man admitted to his strange behaviour when he was confronted with the footage in the interrogation.
The official said, “The defendant admitted he injured himself and asked an Asian worker in the mosque to take pictures. The prosecution decided to detain him for seven days pending further investigations in order to refer the case to the concerned court.”
DT News reported on Saturday that the caretaker of Al Zahra’a Mosque in Hamad Town faked his own assault, claiming that he was attacked by two masked men in the wee hours of Wednesday.
The motives behind the man’s behaviours, however, remain a mystery.
