Bahrain condemns barbaric assault

ManamaBahrain yesterday condemned the assault on a senior Saudi official in London by a group of Bahraini escapees, who were branded “terrorists” by the Kingdom.

Foreign Affairs Ministry issued an official statement yesterday denouncing the attack on the Spokesperson of the Arab Coalition for the Support of Legitimacy in Yemen, Major General Ahmed Al Asiri on Thursday.

“The ministry strongly denounces the barbaric assault by a group of terrorists on the Advisor to the Minister of Defence of Saudi Arabia Major General Ahmed Al Asiri,” the ministry’s statement read.

“This falls within the desperate attempts of some parties to undermine any political efforts to end the Yemeni crisis, and to fuel the conflict and destabilise security and stability in the region as a whole,” the ministry added.

“While the Ministry commends the efforts exerted by Al Asiri in all international forums, it also appreciates the cooperation of the British Police, its keenness to ensure his safety and to respond to the attempt to commit the wrongful attack.”

DT News reported yesterday that a group of wanted individuals in Bahrain verbally assaulted Al Asiri on Thursday, while he was in London to hold talks with the European Council.

They hurled objects at him and the accompanying delegation before the guards stopped them and referred the matter to the British police.

The group included individuals wanted for terror related crimes in the Kingdom and are currently seeking asylum in the UK.

The incident was widely condemned locally and regionally.
