Proposal to fine drivers crossing 20 per cent of road speed limit

Manama : A group of Shura Council members recently submitted a law proposal instructing to fine over-speeding drivers only if they cross 20 percent of the roads’ speed limit.

Khamis Al Rumaihi, Jameela Salman, Khalid Al Maskati, Ahmed Bahzad and Hala Ramzi submitted the proposal which stipulates the amendment of some of the provisions of Traffic Law 23 of 2014.

It was submitted to the council’s Foreign Affairs, Defence and National Security Committee for further studying and revision.

The General Directorate of Traffic had stated earlier that drivers are fined for over-speeding if they cross 10pc of the speed limit of the road. It also clarified that cameras installed on traffic signals also take pictures of speeding vehicles, even if the signal was green.

The members additionally demanded that “traffic fines should be reduced by 50pc if drivers paid them within 15 days of committing the offence instead of the current one week period”.
