Road project to ease traffic clog

ManamaWith an aim to alleviate traffic congestion across the Kingdom, Minister of Works, Municipalities Affairs & Urban  Planning Essam Khalaf announced that construction has begun on a road with two lanes in each direction from Road 4109 to Sheikh Salman Avenue to the South of Sheikh Abdulla School.

The project is part of the government’s urgent development plan designed to ease traffic flows in vital areas and following the directives of Crown Prince, Deputy Supreme Commander and First Deputy Prime Minister HRH Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa.

Khalaf highlighted that the project is one of eleven development projects that have been approved by the Government’s Executive Committee, headed by HRH the Crown Prince. The eleven approved projects form a cornerstone of the multi-year comprehensive plan to develop the Kingdom’s roads and highways.

“The plan, funded by the GCC Development Programme meets international infrastructure standards and will work to strengthen Bahrain’s economic and urban development,” he said.

According to the minister, the project will deliver a dual-access road with two lanes in each direction, passing between the Sacred Heart School and Sheikh Abdulla School and connecting Sheikh Salman Avenue to Road 4109 in Isa Town’s Educational Area.

The project aims to increase the number of entrances to the educational area to six. It provides an additional alternative for traffic exiting the educational area and heading for Manama by avoiding the Isa Town Gate signal and instead heading direct for Isa Town Underpass.

It also aims to re-organise traffic movement, specifically for vehicles coming from Sheikh Zayed Avenue, allowing them to enter the area via the new access road without having to travel through 16 December Avenue.

Additionally, the project will help ease traffic congestion along A’Ali Interchange close to the General Directorate of Traffic and along Isa Town Gate Interchange. Traffic heading towards Manama will be redirected away via the new access road, whose capacity amounts to 2000 vehicle/hour on both directions every day.

Khalaf noted that the Ministry has recently carried out expansion works to ease traffic congestion on the main road networks around the educational areas..

“The educational area is a key area of focus by the Ministry. The implementation of many road revamp projects will help ease traffic and congestion during peak hours,” he stated.
