Kidney care awareness expo begins tomorrow

ManamaThousands of people are expected to take part in a major healthcare awareness event and exhibition which will open tomorrow at the Indian School Bahrain (ISB), according to its organisers.

Organisers of the three-day ‘Shade for Kidney’ expo said that thousands of people have already registered on the website of Thanal to participate in the healthcare event which will conclude on Saturday.

“Online registration has received a huge response. Above 3,500 people have registered online though it is not an indicator of how many people will actually show up at the event. We are expecting a much higher turnout because most people are not aware about the online registration,” said Shabeer Mahe, a coordinator of Thanal, one of the organisers.

“Our goal is to bring awareness about kidney health. The goal is not to have a huge event, but to create a huge impact. We want people to realize the importance of kidney screening, if the event can achieve this - it would be a success,” Mahe added.

“We are expecting people from various nationalities and backgrounds to take part in the expo. The programmes will be held in English, Arabic, Hindi and Malayalam,” said Rafeeq Abdullah, the exhibition’s general convenor.

“Kidney disease does not show many symptoms, they usually progress silently. Often the patient does not realize their condition until it is too late,” said Nasser, a Thanal representative, emphasizing the importance of kidney screening. The expo will hold free kidney screening for the visitors.

The event is held under the patronage of Lieutenant General Shaikh Mohammed bin Abdullah Al Khalifa, the chairman of Supreme Council for Health. Organised by Thanal, a charitable organisation, in collaboration with the Ministry of Health (MOH), the Indian Embassy, Indian School Bahrain and Choice International Consultancy, the event aims to spread awareness about kidney health.

Nine pavilions will be arranged at the exhibition with each pavilion providing various information about kidney health. The first pavilion ‘What is Kidney’ gives a comprehensive detail on Kidneys and its functionalities.

The second pavilion, ‘Causes of Kidney failure explores the risk factors that could lead to kidney failure. Other pavilions includes ‘Symptoms of Kidney diseases’, ‘How to diagnose Kidney diseases’, ‘Treatment modalities for kidney diseases’, ‘how to save a kidney’ and ‘visual documentation of kidney care’. Following the educational pavilions, the visitors will be offered a albumin test and a creatinine test if necessary. The public can register for the event at www.thanalbahrain.com .
