Fee for sanitary services on MPs’ table this week
Manama : A bill seeking to cut off sanitary subsidies will come up for voting in the next regular session of the Parliament, it has emerged.
If the bill becomes law will impose a fee not exceeding “10 per cent of water consumption charges” on non-Bahraini consumers.
Parliamentarians are of the view that the move would help relieve some pressure off the government expenses, as the service now is 100pc subsidised.
The bill seeks to amend some provisions of the Law 33 of the year 2006 on sewage and surface water discharge.
Bahraini domestic sector, however, will be excluded from “paying the fees”.
The bill finds its way to the Parliament after receiving necessary approvals from the Council’s Public Utilities and Environment Committee. The committee has also issued a report after consulting with the Works, Municipalities Affairs and Urban Planning Ministry.
The report stated: “The proposal helps to provide highest quality sewage services while reducing financial requirements.”
The amendment proposes fees for using sanitary networks, monthly sewerage discharges, wastewater treatment and using treated water.
