Yellow boxes sans timers inefficient

ManamaThe yellow boxes at traffic junctions are “inefficient” in the absence of countdown timers, Dr. Jameela Al Sammak MP told the House of Representatives during an open discussion on traffic issues, calling upon the General Directorate of Traffic to reconsider its irrational ways of tackling traffic offences. The MP spoke in the presence of Interior Ministry Undersecretary Shaikh Nasser bin Abdulrahman Al Khalifa and the General Director of Traffic Colonel Shaikh Abdulrahman bin Abdulwahab Al Khalifa.

“How could drivers assume when to enter the yellow box in the junction while there are no countdown timers on the signals. The signal will suddenly turn red and the driver would be fined for entering the yellow box, where they get stuck. They can’t reverse or go forward.”

“Traffic fines are aimed at saving lives and not  a diversification to generate income. If we are talking about saving lives, as stated by the officials in the directorate, what risk a driver poses to others’ lives by entering the yellow box,” Dr. Al Sammak questioned. The legislator also commented on several other issues related to traffic rules and fine system.

“When a road user is fined for driving at a speed of 60 KM/H on a road with the speed limit of 50, what lives are we saving by fining this driver. The fining system should be looked into, in order to save the lives of road users,” she added.

Smart cameras installed at junctions began to function from  May 1 to detect yellow-box violations.
