Sanad wins table tennis title
Manama : Rashid Sanad lifted the boys division title at the First Kingdom of Bahrain Universities Table Tennis Championship on Saturday.
The Bahrain national team star defeated another international player Loay Jamal 3-1 (11-7, 11-8, 8-11, 12-10) in a neck-and-neck final at the Gulf University hall in Sanad.
More than 45 players from nine universities, namely AMA, Arab Open, Ahlia, Kingdom, Talal Abu Gazala, Arabian Gulf, Applied Sciences and hosts the Gulf University competed in this first-of-its-kind one-day championship.
The event comprised three categories in total – academic staff boys and girls. Kaltham Elyasi proved the strongest among the girls participants to capture the trophy, beating national teammate Hessa Al Zayani 3-0 (11-6, 11-4, 11-5) in the concluding match of the five-player round robin competition.In the academics championship, Dr. Islam of the Gulf University was crowned champion after a 3-1 (14-12, 11-9, 8-11, 11-2) win over Gulf University president Dr Muhannad Al Mashhadani in the final.
Supreme Council for Youth and Sports board member, Bahrain Olympic Committee (BOC) member, Women’s Sport Committee chairwoman and Bahrain Table Tennis Association president Shaikha Hayat bint Abdulaziz Al Khalifa presented trophies to the top three players in each category at the awarding ceremony.
