Multiple targets achieved in Giro: Shaikh Nasser

Manama : HH Shaikh Nasser bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Representative of His Majesty the King for Charity Works and Youth Affairs, Chairman of the Supreme Council for Youth and Sports, President of Bahrain Olympic Committee (BOC), crowned the winners of the 100th edition of the Giro D’Italia which concluded on Sunday after stepping on the podium alongside the first three place winners, following a thrilling tour of cycling.  

At the end of the race, Shaikh Nasser expressed his sincere appreciation to the winners, praising the performances displayed during this prestigious tour. “It was a great and exciting tour. The race was very tactical. All the riders performed brilliantly throughout the race, despite the challenges they faced in the world’s toughest track,” Shaikh Nasser said, adding: “I would like to this opportunity to congratulate the Bahrain Merida Cycling Team Captain Vincenzo Nibali for winning second place in the general classification after finishing third in the second stage of the Tour. His results were great and contributed to put Bahrain’s team under the spotlight following his great rank. We hope Nibali will continue his career in the cycling sport and will achieve many honours under Bahrain’s name.” 

Shaikh Nasser stressed the Bahraini participation has achieved the preset goals which the team was founded for them in promoting Bahrain and highlight its economic, tourist and cultural elements. “Bahrain Merida Cycling Team’s participation in the event is a translation for the vision of HM King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa,” he explained.

“The Bahrain team Merida will continue to be present at various international championships and participate in various international tournaments to make honorable achievements in the name of the Kingdom of Bahrain. We look forward to conquering more podiums,” said Shaikh Nasser.

Fans who flocked to see the Italian Tour chanted the name of Nibali during the race after the performances showcased by him in the event as well as for his historical achievements. 

Tom Dumoulin won the 100th edition of the Giro d’Italia in sensational style to make history as the first Dutch winner of the three-week Italian race. Sunweb team leader Dumoulin went into the final stage, a 29.3 km time trial from Monza race track to Milan’s landmark Duomo cathedral, 53secs behind overnight leader Nairo Quintana of Colombia. But the 26-year-old Dutchman, who led the race for nine stage before losing the pink jersey to Quintana on stage 19, secured his maiden grand tour victory after a second-place finish behind stage winner, compatriot and close friend Jos van Emden. Quintana, the 2014 champion who rides for the Movistar team, finished second overall at 31secs behind with Italy’s two-time champion Nibali (Bahrain) finishing third at 40 seconds.
