RCSI Bahrain nurses awarded medals in skills competition

ManamaTwo senior nursing students from the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland-Bahrain (RCSI Bahrain) have been awarded medals as part of the Ministry of Education’s vocational skills competition – skillsBahrain.

Ayesha Abdulla took gold, while Mariam Abdulla was awarded bronze for their efforts in the Health and Social Care competition, which took place at RCSI Bahrain at the end of last month.

The medal-winning students – along with fellow classmates who participated in the competition – were honoured with a special reception at the university recently.

The third annual skillsBahrain event saw 500 contestants compete across a total of 17 technical and vocational skills at a series of venues around the country, with RCSI Bahrain playing host for the first time.

The Health and Social Care competition brought nursing students from the host university head-to-head with their counterparts from the University of Bahrain’s College of Health Sciences in a number of different clinical skills-based challenges.

Organised with the support of labour market bodies, private and higher education institutions and Tamkeen, skillsBahrain forms part of the Ministry of Education’s efforts to promote the technical and vocational education sector.

RCSI Bahrain nursing lecturer, Eman Fateel, performed the role of chief expert and training coordinator for the Health and Social Care programme, having been appointed by Assistant Undersecretary for General and Technical Education, President of National Committee, Latifa Isa Al-Bounohda.

The main aims of the event are to encourage student engagement in various technical and professional disciplines as well as providing opportunities to showcase particular technical and professional skills.

Both Ayesha and Maryam will take part – alongside winners from the other skills categories – in a series of workshops and training programmes over the coming months, to determine who will go forward to represent Bahrain at the 44th World Skills competition in Abu Dhabi in October.

RCSI Bahrain is a constituent university of RSCI, which was established in 1784. Like its Irish counterpart, RCSI Bahrain is a not-for-profit health sciences institution focused on education and research to drive positive change in all areas of human health worldwide.
