Shehab defeats Serwin Rampersad

Manama : Veteran former Davis Cup player Abdul Rahman Shehab had to work hard to defeat Serwin Rampersad 6-4, 7-5 in the qualifying rounds of The Late Ahmed Al Mahoozi Cup - Master Singles at the Bahrain Tennis Club Ramadan Tournament at its premises in Juffair. 

In the other matches, Abdulla M Ahmed was a 6-0, 6-1 winner over Isa Al Sammak, Bas Loohuis got the better of Yousef Redha 6-1, 6-0 and Elias Redha won 6-1, 6-4 against Salman Hassan.

A total of 23 players are featuring in the qualifying knockout format until tomorrow to determine the two players who will join the main draw with eight players receiving automatic entry.

The main competition comprising two groups of five players starts on Friday in the round-robin format, with the semi-finals on June 16 and the final on June 17.

In The Late Yousif Khalil Al Moayyed Cup - Doubles, Ahmed Al Mahmood and Mohammed Abo Hassan beat Ahmed Qaed and Khalid Qayoom 6-4, 6-3 in Group 1, in Group 2 Mohammed Yousif Abdulla and Abdul Majeed Mufiz were 6-4, 6-2 victors over Amin and Mohammed Sharaf and in the same group Ali Fakhro and Ebrahim Qaed got the better of Mohab Mangoud and Islam Abo Alam 6-1, 7-5.

In Group 3, Naji Al Samaheeji and Ahmed Omran ran out 6-4, 6-2 winners against Isa Al Smmak and Ahmed Al Jassas.

The players are in three groups playing round-robin group matches with eight players advancing to the quarter finals today, comprising the top two from the three groups and the best third placed pairs in Group 1 and 2, the semi-finals are set for Saturday and the final match on June 18. 

Meanwhile, in The Late Majid Al Zayani Cup - Super Doubles Group 1, Emad Ali and Yousif Fakhro ran out 6-4, 7-5 winners against Ahmed Dhaif and Bassim Sarwani.

This competition comprises two groups of round-robin matches with the top two qualifying for the semi-finals next Sunday and the final set for June 13.
