Measures to eradicate begging in Muharraq

ManamaAiming to eradicate the “begging phenomenon” from the Bahraini society, Muharraq Governorate Police Directorate yesterday announced the identification of over 50 beggars in the past few weeks.

The directorate explained in a press release issued here yesterday that “as part of previous efforts, 50 cases were charged between May 1 and June 10”.

The announcement came few weeks after the same authority called upon all community partners, including citizens, private establishments and Non-Government Organisations, to carry out their social responsibility to fight the begging phenomenon.

“The Muharraq Governorate Police Directorate renews its call to the public to report begging by calling the hotlines 17573980, 17573985 or 17573986,” yesterday’s statement mentioned.

 “This is part of the second phase of a project to eradicate beggars and street vendors. “The first phase of the project had focused on the deployment of police patrols to achieve its goals,” the directorate added in the statement.

The announcement comes as the number of people begging has increased during the Holy Month of Ramadan, especially near the mosques and markets, misusing the spirit of charity during the holy month.
