Court denies right to appeal

ManamaA court has waived the right to appeal the conviction of the second defendant involved in a money laundering case involving cleric Isa Qassim. The defendants each were handed a suspended one year in prison after they were found guilty of money laundering. The trio was also fined BD100,000 each.

According to court files, Qassim was the one who instructed the duo to raise funds. And, he was reportedly the only decision-maker in the spending process, according to his co-defendants’ statements during questioning. The duo also said that Qassim had used some of the money to buy $1 million worth of properties that were registered under his name.

The public prosecution had said earlier that a sum of $10 million was found deposited in his bank account during investigations.

Qassim’s nationality was earlier stripped off for dividing society.
