Bahrain’s Abdul Redha beats Loohuis to clinch men’s title
Manama : Bahrain national team player Elias Abdul Redha defeated Dutchman Bas Loohuis in straight sets 6-4, 6-3 to clinch the men’s singles title in the 68th BMMI Indian Club Open Tennis Championship which concluded on Tuesday night at its premises in Gudaibiya.
The match played in good spirit and saw the young Bahraini win vital breaks at crucial times to secure his title victory. In the doubles finals match, Dutch pairing of Rick De Groot and Serwin Rampersad defeated Bahraini duo of Rashid Obaidly and Karin Abdul Redha 6-4, 7-5.
The Bahraini pair opened the match on serve, but De Groot and Rampersad won the first break in the third game for an early 2-1 lead and a second in the seventh for a 5-2 lead.
All seemed lost in the first set for the Bahrainis, but they clawed back with a hard fought break in the eighth and followed up holding serve in the next game.
De Groot and Rampersad wrapped up the set in the next game after 30 minutes of play.
In second set action, the first ten games all went with serve before Obaidly unfortunately served a double fault and handed the Dutch pair a break and they made no mistake in closing out the set in the next game after 37 minutes to win overall in a shade under 70 minutes on court.
After the match, the Dutch pair said it was a good match, but had to be somewhat careful as the court was quite slippy and had less grip compared to the other courts they play on around the Kingdom.
The chief guest was past president of The Indian Club Mathew Joseph, who handed out trophies and cash prizes to the winners and runners-up in all five categories played during the tournament.
Tournament sponsors were BMMI, Bahrain Financing Company, VIV, Lulu Exchange, UAE Exchange KIA Motors and Coca- Cola Malabar Gold.
