Manama world’s 55th costliest city: Survey

ManamaManama has been ranked as the 55th most expensive city in the world in Mercer’s 2017 Cost of Living Survey.

The Capital has jumped 16 places in the survey when compared to last year’s report. 

This makes Manama one of the most expensive places in the Middle East, according to the report. Dubai (20) was ranked the most expensive in the region followed by Abu Dhabi (23), and Riyadh (52); all three cities have all climbed in this year’s ranking. Jeddah (117), Muscat (92), and Doha (81) are among the least expensive cities in the region. 

“Cairo (183) is the least expensive city in the region plummeting ninety-two spots from last year following a major devaluation of its local currency, “ the report stated. Luanda, the capital of Angola, is the costliest city in the world, according to the report.  Hong Kong (2), Tokyo (3), Zurich (4), and Singapore (5) make up the top four of the list. 

According to Mercer, Governments and companies use data from the survey to protect the purchasing power of their employees before transferring them abroad.  As a result, multinational organizations are carefully assessing the cost of expatriate packages for their international assignees.
