Zombie meditation: The new technique to mental wellbeing
Manama : Yoga therapy specialist and wellbeing coach at the BDF Hospital Prof. Fatima Al Mansoori launched an innovative meditation technique for teenagers at the Animania event at the Bahrain International Circuit, recently.
“The idea came to me while meditating a few years ago and I found myself practicing it; it’s my secret of feeling happy through the darkest and toughest times and I wanted to share it with the Animania crowd,” she said at the launch.
“Young people are suffering from chronic conditions like IBS, sleep disorders, tension and headache. Obesity rate is increasing among teenagers and a lot of them suffer from psychosomatic diseases at an early age due to unhealthy lifestyle and if we want to grab their attention we have to speak their language, start somewhere .. plant a seed,” she added.
Explaining various meditation techniques further, Fatima said there are several popular methods such as breath meditation, mantra meditation, and guided meditation.
Traditionally, meditation is done in meditative setting posture but can also be done standing, lying down or even walking, she said.
Dwelling on the difficulty in practicing meditation she said: “From my experience when teaching meditation, people often get frustrated because they can’t sit comfortably and lose focus on breath,” she said.
“When things get extremely stressful, people can’t pay attention to breath due to the increasing speed of mind; at such times I do what I call “zombie meditation” and it works wonders,” she said.
The theory behind it is simple, says Mansoori, adding: sound is the key element in Zombie meditation.
“Vibrations can create healing effect and zombie sounds consist of the most therapeutic healing forms of sounds. These vibrations can align the chakras and work on universal level! Also the bliss of a slow mindful zombie walk can bring you to a higher level of consciousness. While making zombie noises you’re also extending your exhalation and breath-holding time which results into relaxation and calmness of the mind; it also acts as a detoxification method for the physical body! Further more death meditation has proven powerful since thousands of years, imagining that you no longer alive puts you in a different prospective and allows you to appreciate and understand life better. All together zombie meditation is a very powerful practice, Fatima said.
