Over a tonne of fresh shrimp confiscated
Manama : Over a tonne of fresh shrimp was recently confiscated by the authorities, despite a ban imposed on shrimping since four months.
Works, Municipalities Affairs and Urban Planning Ministry confirmed in a statement issued here yesterday that at least 47 people who violated the ban and 26 boats were detected since the six-month ban came into effect in March.
“Control and inspection is being carried out on a daily basis through the the ports in all cities and villages of the Kingdom of Bahrain,” the ministry stressed.
As reported earlier, the ban is annually implemented since 1980, granting shrimps to grow and reproduce.
Works, Municipalities Affairs and Urban Planning Minister Essam Khalaf issued Resolution 27 of 2017 on March 7, banning shrimping and the sale of fresh shrimps for six months.
The minister affirmed that violators of shrimping ban will be subjected to penalties mentioned in Law 20 of 2002 including the confiscation of ships and equipment used in shrimping during the ban.
However, local fishermen complained about fresh shrimps being caught, sold and smuggled outside the country during the ban period by organised networks. They repeatedly demanded more deterrent punishments for violators to combat the phenomenon.
