ManamaThe High Criminal Court extended the detention of a Bahraini accountant accused of embezzlement for another 15 days. The accountant is believed to have pocketed BD97,000 from a bank account and transferred to his girlfriend in Thailand. Aged in his early twenties, he was hired by a local bank to work as a teller after he enrolled in an accounting course.

He smartly accessed to the profile of one of the bank’s customers and he changed his mobile phone number, so he doesn’t receive SMS notifications when any banking transactions made involving his account. The young Bahraini man reportedly embezzled the amount by making 11 withdrawals.

The victim discovered the misconduct after he went to the bank to withdraw money but he was told there weren’t sufficient funds. After investigations, it was found that the defendant was responsible for the embezzlement.

And he was arrested. During questioning, the accused man revealed that he was in love with the Thai woman and he wanted to travel to Thailand to spend big on her. “She was in Thailand and she requested me to transfer money to her. She didn’t believe the amount of money she was receiving. I was deeply in love with her,” he told prosecutors.
