Critics of Al Asfoor ignorant of Islamic history, says JWD
Manama : A leading religious authority in the Kingdom has rejected the criticism received by its chairman during the past two days because of his visit to a controversial shrine near the southeast costs of the island.
Jaffaria Waqf Directorate (JWD) of Justice, Islamic Affairs and Endowments Ministry described in a written statement those who criticised its Chairman Shaikh Abdulmohsen Al Asfoor of being “ignorant of the Islamic history of Bahrain”.
The statement mentioned, “It’s known to all that these sites of historical Islamic figures have historically been a testimony to the Islamic and Arab civilization, and a place of intimacy and tolerance among the people of Bahrain, as well as a destination for the visit of the members of the two sects (Shia and Sunni).
Some deny these facts by ignorance of history or for electoral or other purposes against the national unity and the greater good.”
JWD rejected in its statement the criticism made by an MP, a columnist and other activists against Shaikh Al Asfoor and his visit to a small island off the costs of Askar.
DT News reported yesterday that Shaikh Al Asfoor and a delegation from JWD visited the island which is believed to have the grave of a religious figure who was buried there centuries ago.
However, many believe that this personality isn’t buried in Bahrain.
This includes the area’s representative Theyab Al Nuaimi, who said in a statement that the visit is “provocative” and rejected by the residents of Askar village.
Al Nuaimi warned of the intentions of JWD to takeover the island, on the pretext of the shrine, stating that he prevented similar attempts in the past and pledging to raise the matter in the House of Representatives.
