50pc of cars owned by expats, visitors

ManamaAround 50 per cent of cars in Bahrain are owned by expatriates and visitors, according to representatives of Works, Municipalities Affairs and Urban Planning Ministry and the General Directorate of Traffic.

The officials, who discussed the means to reduce the number of vehicles on the Kingdom’s roads during a dialogue session hosted by Bahrain News Agency, revealed that around 50 per cent of the vehicles on roads in Bahrain in 2017 were  owned by foreign residents and people who make visits to the Kingdom.

Officials who participated in the session discussed the authorities’ schemes tackling traffic issues, including the “traffic model for transportation 2040”, which took a lion’s share of the discussion.

The officials explained that the model is a computer programme that contains information about the road networks, whether current or future, revealing negative or positive traffic impacts.

The challenges and factors of developing road networks were also highlighted during the dialogue session.
