Sadiq Mikhou’s dreams shattered
Manama : Bahrain missed out on any further medals last night as the 16th IAAF World Championships concluded in London.
In the 1,500 metres men’s final, 27-year old Sadiq Mikhou (three minutes 35.81 seconds) finished sixth of 12 runners behind gold medallist Elijah Manangoi (Kenya, 3:33.61), Timothy Cheruiyot (Kenya, 3:33.99) who had set the pace for most of the race and had to settle for the silver and Norwegian Filip Ingebrigsten (3:34.53) getting the bronze medal.
Mikhou had previously set a personal best time (3:31.34) in June at a meet in the Netherlands.
In the women’s 5,000 metres race final, Bahrain’s 26-year old Kalkidan Gazahegne (15:28.21) finished 14th of 15 runners despite leading the pack after 1,000 metres (3:18.62).
The race as it progresses saw Ethiopian sensation Almaz Ayana (14:40.35) lead at the 2,000, 3,000 and 4,000 metre marks, but finished second and a silver medal, behind gold winner Hellen Onsando Obiri (Kenya, 14:34.86) for gold and Sifan Hassan (Netherlands, 14:42.73) who took bronze.
Bahrain’s medals were a gold picked up Rose Chelimo in the women’s marathon and silver for Salwa Eid Naser in the women’s 400 metres.
