Bahrain victorious
Manama : Bahrain under coach Yousuf Khalifa Alasbool got back to winning ways with a straight sets 25-23, 25-16, 25-16 win yesterday against Cuba in the 13th to 16th Classification matches on the penultimate day of the 2017 FIVB Boys’ U19 World Championship at Shaikh Isa Sports City in Riffa.
In the first set, Bahrain took an early lead at 6-4 and maintained a lead for most of it until the Cubans came back late on to tie at 20-20, then the hosts went on to win three unanswered points for 23-20 lead and clinch the set.
The second set action saw Bahrain again start well with a 9-6 lead only to see Cuba claw back to 14-14, it needed a strong finish with seven unanswered points to 21-14 to secure a second set win.
Third set action saw Bahrain start strongly with a early 7-2 lead and increasing to 11-3 which was maintained throughout to ensure victory and a match today against Puerto Rico for the 13th and 14th places.
Top scoring for Bahrain was Mohammed Jassim (15 points) and Hassan Haider (13) and for Cuba it was Lazaro Yoelvis Brunet Llanes (13).
Bahrain are captained by Saif Yusuf, the libero is Hussain Abdulla and the rest of the squad comprises Sayed Mohammed Al Abbar, Jawher Rashed, Mohammed Jassim, Mohammed Haroon, Hassan Haider, Hussain Thamer, Hassan Mohammed, Mahmood Abdulhussain, Yousif Saif and Sayed Yousuf Ashoor.
Meanwhile in the semi-finals, Iran maintained a perfect record winning 3-0 ( 25-17, 25-23, 30-28) against South Korea to reach today’s final at 7pm with their top scorers being Porya Yali (21) and Amirhossein Esfandiar (10) and for the Koreans Donghyeok Im (13) and Sungjin Lim (12).
Russia shocked the previously unbeaten record of Japan with an emphatic 3-0 (25-17, 25-23, 30-28) defeat of Japan, top scoring for Russia was Pavel Tetyukhin (21) and Ivan Kuznetcov (15) and for Japan it was Kento Miyaura (18) and Shunichiro Sato (11).
