University of Bahrain join hands with Microsoft

Manama The University of Bahrain (UOB) yesterday announced the signing of an agreement with Microsoft to help Bahrain establish itself as a major regional Fintech player and attract overseas investment as a startup hub.  

Commenting on the deal, Professor, Riyad Yousif Hamzah, President of the University of Bahrain, said, “Microsoft Certified courses will be integrated into the university’s newly revamped orientation programme, which starts in September.”

The deal was signed by Professor Riyad Yousif Hamzah and Sharif Tawfiq General Manager of Microsoft Bahrain and Oman.  

Professor Riyad explained that the deal allows students to earn Microsoft certification while studying English and math. The programme over two semesters is expected to enhance students’ academic and professional development.

“The certifications will help equip students with 21st-century skills to be market ready and increase their prospects with future employers,” he added 

Highlighting the importance of digital transformation in Bahrain’s highly competitive service sector Professor Riyad said: “As Bahrain establishes itself as a major regional player in Fintech and attracting overseas investment as a startup hub, UOB must be central to this growth through leveraging our talent and developing high-quality skilled graduates”. 

Commenting on the deal, Sharif Tawfiq stressed that the MoU is another example of Microsoft’s joint success with UoB, “not only benefitting the university but Bahrain’s economy and its society as a whole”.
