Capital Municipal Council inspects labour camps in Bahrain
Manama : “This kind of living is definitely not accepted in a country like Bahrain.”
This was the words of Vice President of Capital Municipal Council, Mazen Ahmad Al-Omran, after visiting the labour camp at Al Muatasim Avenue at Road Number 421, Block 304.
“This is definitely not a civilised way of living,” Al-Omran added.
“I put the blame on two parties, one on the landlord and second on the people who accepted to live in such horrendous conditions.”
The labour camp at Al Muatasim Avenue caught public attention, after DT News reported the appalling conditions of workers at the camp who lived without electricity and water supply, apparently cut by their landlord to save costs.
They pleaded the authorities to take urgent steps against the landlord to make the place livable for its inmates.
The authorities responded by forming an inspection team comprising Vice President of Capital Municipal Council, Mazen Ahmad Al-Omran and Senior Inspection Engineer of Capital Municipal Council Jaafar Salman.
“The building is in a horrendous condition, especially in terms of safety and security,” Al-Omran, told DT News during his visit to the camp.
“The electricity junction boxes are completely open and there is a high possibility of short circuit.”
“Gas cylinders are kept all over the place,” he said warning: “One mistake and it would lead to losing many lives and destroying the entire building.”
“We have seen in the past what gas cylinder blasts can do and how horrific they can be,” he said, adding that the “entire building has wooden stairs, which are completely damaged.”
He also told us that an illegal gold workshop is operating inside the camp. “They are also using a gas cylinder torch at the workshop, which is a big threat to the lives of the people
there.”
Senior Inspection Engineer of Capital Municipal Council Jaafar Salman told DT News that the issue will be transferred to the area engineer and he would further inspect the site and get a detailed report on the violations.
“The owner will be given time to fix the violations and in case the violations aren’t fixed the case will be directed to the court,” he said.
“The Capital Municipal Council will take immediate action and make sure that there is relief for the labourers,” stressed Al-Omran.
Meanwhile, one of the workers told us: “I really thank DT News for bringing our misery to the council’s notice.”
“After the report got published our landlord has stopped terminating electricity and water,” he revealed.
