The presentation included introduction of WMO and its disaster risk reduction programme, as well as the WMO Tropical Cyclone Programme, presenting the mechanisms for developing the disaster risk reduction road map and the precautionary steps to reduce crises associated with natural disasters under the Global Multi-Hazard Warning System.

Dr. Abdelghany noted that most of the disasters in the Arab region were caused by drought, earthquakes. floods, and storms.

“More than 37 million Arab people were affected and more than 20 billion dollars were lost between 1980 and 2008 due to national disasters,” he said.
