Bahrain calls for collective efforts to end human trafficking
Washington : Bahrain has called for adopting stringent measures to fight the battle against the scourge of human trafficking.
“There is an urgent need to enhance public awareness on the importance of combating all forms of human trafficking,” said Bahrain’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Jamal Fares Al-Ruwaie.
He was speaking at the High Level Meeting of the United Nations General Assembly on the Evaluation of the United Nations Global Plan of Action against Trafficking in Persons, held from 27 to 28 September 2017.
In his address to the General Assembly, Al Ruwaie insisted that there is an urgent need to enhance cooperation between member states and various UN agencies to tackle the issue of human trafficking.
“The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees and the International Labour Organisation and member nations should join hands in this regard,” he said
In this regard, he also pointed out that Bahrain was one of the first countries to support the call for action to put an end to forced labour, modern slavery and trafficking in people.
In his speech, Ambassador Al-Ruwaie reflected upon the negative impact of armed conflicts around the world on exacerbating the problem of human trafficking, and on the importance of resolving conflicts as an essential tool for the preservation of human rights and effective reduction of trafficking crimes.
