Bahrain elected UNESCO vice president

Paris : Bahrain has elected one of the vice presidents of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO)’s 39th General Assembly in the French capital Paris. Bahrain won the confidence of general assembly members after unanimously nominated by the Arab group.

Education Minister Dr. Majid bin Ali Al Nuaimi, Chairman of Bahrain National Education, Science and Culture Committee hailed Bahrain’s achievement for the second time consecutively that reconfirms the Kingdom’s good reputation thanks to the directives of the wise leadership. 

The minister added that this achievement expresses the international community’s appreciation of Bahrain and its effective role inside the Organization, pointing out that the deputy chairs of the general assembly assume key roles in steering its activities.

Dr. Al Nuaimi met with UNESCO’s Director-General Irina Bokova in her office in the presence of Dr. Mohammed Abdulghaffar the ambassador of Bahrain to France and its general representative to the UNESCO.

The minister expressed Bahrain’s gratitude and appreciation of her support during her 8-year tenure at the helm of the organization, in diverse areas especially her support to the UNESCO-King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa Award for ICT in Education, the Regional Centre for ICT operating under the UNESCO’s supervision, as well as various aspects of cooperation with Bahrain. He reaffirmed Bahrain’s support to the UNESCO as the symbol of fruitful international cooperation through its perpetual efforts to achieve its noble humanitarian goals.

The minister headed the Kingdom’s delegation to the UNESCO’s 39th General Assembly attended by heads of states, senior officials and experts in the fields of education, science and culture.

The general assembly discusses diverse topics, including the UNESCO Strategy 2015-2030, the achieved SDGs, boosting life-time education opportunities for all, measures taken by Members States to achieve such goal, as well as discussion of the UNESCO’s policies for upcoming phase. 

The general assembly also witnesses the inauguration of UNESCO’s recently-elected Director-General Audrey Azoulay, and will bid farewell to its outgoing Director-General Irina Bokova.
