Join hands with UN for SDG: Sharkawi

ManamaA top UN official yesterday called on entrepreneurs to join hands with the United Nation in the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

United Nations Development Programme Resident Representative, Amin El Sharkawi, was addressing the World Entrepreneurs Investment Forum 2017 yesterday at Bahrain International Exhibition and Convention Centre.

“The SDGs have given us and you a roadmap to 2030 so let us work together hopefully to create an action plan,” the UN Resident Representative told the delegates.

“UN would like to create an ‘action plan’ for strengthening such partnerships and moving forward,” he said. Elaborating, Sharkawi told the conference that “SDG gives hope” stressing that there are three fundamental points about SDG that are ‘universal’.

All countries, he said, are included in it no matter “rich or poor, small or big”. “It incorporates integrality since it is practical and includes the development of all areas of a country’s development and lastly it requires everyone’s input including.”

He, however, told the conference that targets of SDGs could be achieved “only with your expertise as entrepreneurs for the advancement of technologies and innovations.”

Explaining more the importance of the event in Bahrain to the UN, Sharkawi stressed that WEIF is “a unique platform”, which has become the only UN global event which focuses on entrepreneurs, “who encourages a process of innovation and modernisation which can generate a new way of thinking.”

“It can support the creation of wealth and give a dynamic solution to our problems and provide economic freedom and greater quality of life,” he stressed. In this regard, Sharkawi highlighted the life of Steve Jobs. “Steve Jobs found a unique and innovative solution to multiple problems by thinking outside the box,” Sharkawi said referring to the development of iPhone.

“This is a good example of how innovation changes our lives for the better,” Sharkawi said adding: “We need your fresh ideas and pioneering minds to develop new approaches to help us move forward on the sustainable development agenda.”

The idea, Sharkawi said, will pave way for community development citing the dramatic shift witnessed by the world in the use of renewable energy in recent years. “It a sector that provides many opportunities for entrepreneurs,” he said.

He also reminded the conference participants that the “world is changing at a pace and speed that we sometimes cannot comprehend” calling for urgent action.
