Fighters wow the crowd with high-octane show
Manama : The first day of the 2017 IMMAF World Championships turned out to be an eventful one with the stars of the ring, both from Bahrain and abroad, producing some high-octane performances.
His Highness Shaikh Khalid bin Hamad Al-Khalifa, who was keen on supporting the national team, was present at their side in the ring and at the coach’s corner to guide them during their bouts.
Encouraging Bahraini players to present their best Shaikh Khalid said: “We have great confidence in our fighters to achieving more victories and reach a new achievement in the world championship.”
“The victories achieved by the Bahrain fighters are a clear indication of their huge capabilities and the great development of MMA in Bahrain,” said Shaikh Khalid, the First Deputy President of the Supreme Council for Youth and Sport, Honorary Chairman of the Bahrain Mixed Martial Arts Federation (BMMAF), Chairman of the Higher Organising Committee for the BRAVE International Combat Week and the 4th edition of the Mixed Martial Arts World Championship.
Assessing the performance of the national team at the Championship, Shaikh Khalid said the Bahraini fighters have put in a good performance at IMMAF so far.
“They will record more wins in the tournament,” Shaikh Khalid said adding: “The tournament saw a very distinguished Bahraini presence through a group of fighters who were keen to provide their best technical skills and dedicating all their experience in order to win these bouts.”
The fighters, Shaikh Khalid said, have shown varying levels of capabilities. “Some have won and others have been very strong but lost.” “We believe that the future will be better for them because of their impressive levels and strong representation of the Kingdom,” he said.
Khalid Abdul-Aziz Al-Khayat, Head of the Executive Committee of the BRAVE International Combat Week, said, “Shaikh Khalid’s continuous presence at the IMMAF shows his passion for the national team.”
Graceful gesture
When Bahrain’s mixed martial arts player Ramadan Gitenov was injured from his match against his French rival Xecebede His Highness Shaikh Khalid bin Hamad Al-Khalifa showed a graceful gesture towards Gitenov by escorting his personally to the medical clinic for treatment.
During the game, the Frenchman Xecebede punched the face of Ramadan, causing him to fall injured on the ground, and was treated by paramedics, announcing after that his withdrawal from the match and announcing Frenchman Xecebede as the winner.
The fighter rose and managed to walk out of the ring amidst applause from sports fans who wished the fighter a swift recovery and return to the ring to join the rest of the team.
Biggest supporter
“The biggest supporter of this game is His Highness Shaikh Khalid bin Hamad Al-Khalifa, where he was keen to support the players during the bouts, which is a clear indication of His Highness’s efforts to provide full support to the national team and the tournament”.
He added that the organising committee is working around the clock to have the event as a success. He said that Bahrain Olympic Committee and the Ministry of Youth and Sports Affairs have also been instrumental in the success of the tournament.
Ali Yaqoub loses to Stevens
The bouts saw mixed results for players who began with the loss of Ali Yaqoub to American player Cyan Stevens in the afternoon. Despite the loss, optimism was present and the Bahrainis did not feel despair.
Loss of Hamad Matar
Hamad Matar lost to his Canadian rival Ali Wasiq, who presented a strong level in combat, and in which Matar was unable to win and fell victim to the Canadian player.
Mehmeedov starts victories
