On a green mission

Manama : Pedestrians will soon enjoy a comfortable walk under shady trees along the lanes in Sitra, thanks to the ‘Green Capital Project’ by the Capital Governorate.

Forty saplings were planted in Sitra by the Capital Governorate with the participation of students of creativity and hibiscus nursery as part of a wider plan to increase the green cover in the Kingdom.

The project, an Agricultural Sector Development Initiative, was held in cooperation with National Initiative for the Development of the agricultural sector and the Municipality of the Capital on the occasion of the Tree Week.

“The initiate is aimed at encouraging environmentally friendly projects, promote their concepts among the people and to reduce pollution in the Capital,” said Shaikh Hisham bin Abdulrahman Al Khalifa, Governor of the Capital Governorate.

Through this project, Shaikh Hisham said, the Capital Governorate looks to raise awareness about issues affecting the lives of the people, which also falls within the recommendation issued by the Coordinating Council of the province of the Capital.

“The National Initiative is keen to participate in afforestation campaigns like this to promote community partnerships and to increase green spaces,” said Shaikha Maram Bint Issa Al Khalifa, Secretary-General of the National Initiative for the Development of the Agricultural Sector.

Expressing her keenness to participate in more initiatives like this, Shaikha Maram said campaigns like this are important in creating “agricultural awareness and introduce community members to the importance of afforestation and its impact on life and the ecosystem.”
