Bahrain reports 570 kidney failure cases in 2016
Manama : Kidney diseases are on the rise in the Kingdom with 570 kidney failure cases reported in 2016, data by the Health Ministry has showed.
The numbers of patients rose from 446 in 2014 to 570 in 2016, Health Ministry Undersecretary Dr. Waleed Al Manea confirmed.
Speaking at the Annual Kidney Conference organised by the ministry, Dr. Al Manea confirmed that the patients undergo hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis procedures at the centres operating under the ministry in Salmaniya Medical Complex (SMC) and Abdulrahman Kanoo Health Centre for Kidney Diseases in Muharraq Governorate.
“The ministry provides 71 beds for dialysis patients. 25 of those are at the SMC while 46 beds are available at Abdulrahman Kanoo Health Centre for Kidney Diseases.
Work is in progress now to build another centre in Hunainiya are in the Southern Governorate that will provide additional 60 beds,” Dr. Al Manea said.
He also noted that the Military Hospital of the Royal Medical Services serves 430 kidney failure patients, while 43 patients are treated in private healthcare establishments.
Several research papers on diagnosis, treatment, kidney stones, renal transplantation, pregnancy and stress related work among the nursing staff in dialysis units, kidney dialysis, nutrition and quality of life of kidney patients were also presented at the annual conference.
